I think this is the same species that stung me in the lip. They construct a ball-like hive and the individuals are of similar appearance. In the photograph below, one of the workers is about to place another ‘brick’.

This this might be Polybia occidentalis. Have you ever considered putting your photos out on something like Flickr also? Or bugguide.net for the insect ones? You have so many good photos that can help others with identification and research.
Sweet.
Isn’t Flickr just for trendy, hipster freaks…? What kind interactions would I and others benefit if my photographs were there?
I’ve never heard of BugGuide.net!
No, nerd, it’s for nerds of all kinds!
Look at how few Polybia photos there are: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/Polybia
But there are over 1400 Vespidae photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/Vespidae
How would you benefit? Learning from others, teaching others, building community and interest in all things environmental, ? I guess it’s similar to your blog, but there are already a bunch of huge nerds out on Flickr. And people would be all over you, “Oh, Justin, this wasp photo is just GORGEOUS!” You’d get a major self-esteem boost.
Or you could be famous. This guy takes pictures of awesomeness and he was just on the Today Show: http://www.flickr.com/photos/opoterser/ Maybe he’s a trendy hipster though? Beards are pretty trendy now I guess.
The prospect of having internet fame is very convincing…
I will look into it, although transfering most of this pictures will take some time, but I think the non-fame related benefits may be worth it. Someday, anyway…
