One of my students, David, is planning to survey fish communities at Las Cruces. I may build a fish identification page here, but we’ll just start by posting some of what we catch here.
This is a long-whiskered catfish (Pimelodidae) called Rhamdia rogersi. I’ve seen this species in RBAMB and, I think, on La Peninsula Osa.
Amos and Allison completed a 5K run in 33 minutes last weekend. Here, Amos leads the way while Eva and I shiver and watch.
Amos was entered into the Atlanta’s HowlOWeeenie festival last weekend, where he participated in a howl-off and sadly lost. Here, he waits in line with Allison and howl’s with her.
Through teary eyes, I write that Éva was hit and killed last night by a vehicle. Allison and I are currently in West Palm Beach, where Allison competed in the South East Regional CrossFit competition (I’ll obviously post more), and Éva was being watched by a friend in Atlanta. She escaped, likely in attempt to find Allison and I, and was reported hit by an animal rescue or veterinary clinic this morning. I wish to share some photographs of her that I had queued, but not completed posts for, to spread the sad news.
After a brief hike through a woodlot on the edge of John A. White Park, we came to Greenwood Cemetery, where Éva didn’t approve of a certain statue. Although in a welcoming stance as percieved by people, Éva seemed to interpret the stance, and size, as threatening, perhaps because it might be a stance people take before picking her up. She began barking at the statue, so I walked around it with her, and Allison and I sat down below it for a time. She continued to pace around and bark…

Soon after purchasing my digital SLR, Allison began pestering me to take photographs of her – from viewing a waterfall, to poorly done senior-picture-like photographs. I attributed it to her unique quirkiness, but after having gone to Mill Creek Park with her father, I now realize it was inherited. While Allison has subdued her requests for photographs of herself on hikes, since I deny her most times, her father, Larry, has not been conditioned as such; he asked me to photograph he and himself with Allison at every site worth seeing. The morning after climbing, we swam in the nearby tributary to the Obed River and enjoyed the view of it’s valley.
A few weeks ago, Allison and I met up with her friend, Katie, from the track team at Brown, who is currently a faculty member at University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Katie and her friends, including her boyfriend Warren, invited us to go rock climbing at an internationally recognized climbing hot spot: the Obed Wild and Scenic River. As first time outdoor climbers, we didn’t make it to the top of any of the sport climbing routes, but we did well enough, especially when our competitive nature spurred both of us to make the extra reach…
If I remember correctly, we tried a couple of the routes at Lilly Bluff, and Clear Creek.

Saturday, Allison and I participated in a competition/fundraiser at our Atlanta CrossFit gym, Fitness Battalion. During the competition, heats of three competitors raced for number of reps in a workout called ‘Fight Gone Bad’, which is a reference to a tiring three rounds of a boxing fight. The workout includes five exercises, each done for one minute , with one minute of rest between three rounds of the five exercises: wall balls, sumo-deadlift-high-pulls, box jumps, push presses, and rowing. Allison trained hard the past few weeks and it paid off; she won an $85 certificate for a local catering service and the women’s competition with 329 reps. All Heart, All Day.
