A relative of the Tipulids, we encountered this Bittacomorpha clavipes at the beaver marsh on Thursday’s vertebrate zoology field trip, along with about four snakes, two of which we caught.

Time lapse white pine news
The white pine I have been photographing for the last 5 or 6 years appears to have suffered some herbivory, and it may not have the reserves to recover. I had been photographing it nearly each time I went home, so I have around 20 photographs in all seasons of its growth since it was a small ball of needles arising from the soil. In time, I’ll present those photos here… but while I work on compiling them, here is a photograph of a riffle nearby the pine. I like the depth of field here but the Spring colors had emerged yet…

Discovery launch
One of the last few take-offs of the shuttle Discovery, caught on an iPhone camera, courtesy of Evan Noel (Allison’s little cousin). The shuttle was destined for the International Space Station, both of which can be seen in the night sky (Bad Astronomy).
